Packing is where most moves win or lose. Good packing protects your stuff and makes move day faster. Here are ten tips from our crew.
1. Start early. Begin packing non essentials two to three weeks before move day. Seasonal items, books, and decor can go first.
2. Use small boxes for heavy items. Books and canned goods belong in small boxes. Large boxes are for light bulky things like pillows and linens.
3. Label every box on two sides. Write the room and a short list of contents. Your movers and your future self will thank you.
4. Pack plates vertically. Stack plates on edge like records, with padding between each. They survive the trip much better this way.
5. Fill empty space. Use towels, socks, or packing paper to fill gaps in boxes. Things should not shift when you shake the box gently.
6. Keep hardware in labeled bags. When you take apart furniture, put screws and bolts in a zip bag and tape it to the piece.
7. Pack a first night box. Include toiletries, phone chargers, a change of clothes, basic tools, and snacks. You will need these before you unpack everything.
8. Do not overpack boxes. Keep each box under 50 pounds if you can. Heavy boxes break, hurt backs, and slow down the crew.
9. Use wardrobe boxes for clothes. Hanging clothes go straight from closet to box to closet. No folding needed.
10. Take photos of electronics. Snap a picture of the back of your TV and computer before unplugging. Reconnecting is easy when you have a reference.
