Four weeks sounds like plenty of time until it is not. Use this week by week checklist to stay ahead of your move.
Four weeks out. Book your mover now if you have not already. Start decluttering room by room. Donate, sell, or toss what you do not need. Fewer things means a cheaper and faster move. Gather packing supplies: boxes, tape, markers, and packing paper.
Three weeks out. Start packing non essentials. Seasonal clothes, books, decor, and rarely used kitchen items. Notify important parties of your address change: bank, employer, subscriptions, and voter registration. Arrange transfer of school and medical records if needed.
Two weeks out. Confirm the details with your moving company: date, time, addresses, and any special items. Pack most of your belongings, leaving only daily essentials unpacked. Plan for pets and kids on move day. Arrange a sitter or a safe room away from the action.
One week out. Pack a first night box with essentials: toiletries, chargers, medications, basic tools, snacks, and a change of clothes. Defrost the freezer if you are moving it. Do a final declutter pass. Confirm parking or elevator access at both locations.
Move day. Do a final walkthrough of every room, closet, and cabinet. Keep important documents and valuables with you personally. Be available for questions from the crew. Do a walkthrough at the new place as items come in.
The key to a smooth move is starting early and working steady. If you need help with any part of it, Old Fashion Moving is here. Call (203) 928-8844.
